Other Important Information
Tour Length: 1 DaynnGroup Size: 3-6 people maxnnDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous (Max 2.5 miles hiking, 400ft of elevation gain)nnDeparture Info: We will meet at The Bend Tour Company at 12:00pm on Saturday, September 19th, 2020 to discuss the plan for the afternoon, then leave for the Painted Hills Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We will end up back at the Bend Tour Company around 10:00pm. Guide: Christian Murillo is a professional landscape photographer based in Bend, Oregon. His work has been displayed in galleries and magazines all over the world. Lately, he has been working on a project in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, photographing the unique patterns in the landscape, and exploring what that means to modern day society. Camera Gear: While our guides are all expert photographers, we might not be experts with your specific camera model. In order to get the most out of the tour, you will need a camera that has the ability to control ISO, aperture and shutter speed independently, and know how to access those features on your camera. As for lenses, a wide angle zoom lens is the most useful for landscape pictures (equivalent 16-35 on a full-frame camera or 10-22mm on a crop sensor). For this workshop, a mid-range lens (24-70 on full frame or 18-55 on crop sensor) and telephoto lens (up to 400mm) will come in handy to help isolate specific patterns in the landscape. With that said, regardless of what lenses you bring, there will be plenty to photograph. A tripod and circular polarizing filter are recommended. Most importantly you'll need a pack to bring everything up while you hike. Don't forget extra batteries, memory cards, and cleaning supplies. Weather Conditions: The Painted Hills are located in the the dry sagebrush desert landscape between the Ochoco and Blue Mountain ranges. The temperatures in the summer are typically warm during the day (mid-80s), and cool in the evenings (low-50s), but we encourage you to check the weather prior to the workshop. Food/Water: We do not provide food on our outings. All participants should bring food/water to hold them through during the tour. We will have a cooler where you can store food and drink. Please bring a water bottle that can hold at least 1L, as this workshop involves hiking in a dry environment. We will supply extra water in the car where you can refill your water bottles between activities. What to Wear: You should check the weather forecast prior to coming on the trip. Temperatures in the late summer tend to range between 50-85 degrees. It is important to bring warm layers and a rain jacket in case of inclement weather. Restroom Facilities: The park has restrooms at several stopping points. Cell Phones: Bring your cell phone along! They are great for capturing candid images. Note that cell service may be limited during some or most of the workshop. There are USB ports in our vehicles so bring a charging cable if you need one. Keep in mind there is very little service if any at the painted hills.
